The Humane Society of New Zealand often receives stories and tales from people across the country on the joys of adopting a pet. Below, you will find just some of the stories we receive. If you would like to share your story with us to publish in a newsletter or online, please email us your story as well as a photo of your Happy Tail.

Amber

Thought you would like to see some pics of Amber (previously Alice) the 16 (now 17) week old Red Heeler we adopted. She is doing really well with us and we both love her, so does everyone who meets her. Gained 2.5kg in 2 weeks and her stitches are out and she is healing well. She gets on really well with our other dog Chloe (who is almost exactly 1 year older than her to the day). She is a cheeky character and has a tendency to look at me and then ignore me sometimes when I ask her to "come here." Read more...

Bailey

Bailey is a great social little puppy who is very laid back and loves all sorts of dogs and humans. He adores human females the most and flirts with them at the dog park and gets lots of kisses and cuddles. Read more...

Bessie

Bingo

Bingo was a bit boisterous when we first took him home, but he has settled down, and is very well loved my all of us, but especially my kids. He is very gentle with them, and they love taking him with on our walks. Read more...

Bobby

We adopted Bobby in August and have fallen in love with our "wiry guy" already - he loves cuddles, sleeps on our bed and plays all day with our other two dogs. He loves agility and comes with me when I'm riding the horses,or when there's farm work to be done. Read more...

We'd like to tell you how Bobi has settled in with us. He is utterly gorgeous, learning daily, such a bright boy. He is very gentle though still full of baby bounce and delight, keeping a couple of 60ishers on their toes! Read more...

Bree - Our Very Own Drug Detection Dog!

Bree has flown through the final validation test with 100% accuracy and is now a full time working drug dog in New Zealand Detector Dog Services. She loves the work and being out and about every day with her handler and I think they have a very bright future together. Read more...

Bruno

We adopted Bruno, a German Shepard-Ridgeback cross, just before Christmas 2010 when he was 4 months old. Bruno is completely involved in our family's life as there isn't much he doesn't enjoy doing, from walks on the beach to fishing trips, rides in the car and visiting friends. Our babies have settled in real well and are just the most beautiful kittens, they keep us entertained all the time with their play fighting and stalking each other. The only problem is that not a lot gets done in the house. Read more...

We found our boy in an advert the Humane Society placed some eight years ago, when he was described as a Lab cross, pretty boy. He was four months old and in that transitory stage where he was gangly, and not so pretty, but we could see he would become a very handsome man as he matured.

Eden is the sweetest girl, loves belly rubs, kisses and her and Fletch follow each other everywhere. He waits for her to drink the water first, and she waits for him at the door when they come back inside from potty. Read more...

Elvis

This is Elvis grown up. He has fairly long legs, and might grow some more. He has such a sweet nature, and is affectionate (no doubt thanks to you), and definitely part of the family. Read more...

Fergy

Fergy is just the most magnificent dog. She learns quickly, has a wonderful temperament, and is doing everything you could ask of a dog. She has filled the void in our home caused by the passing of our miniature daschund, Holly, earlier this year. Read more...

Georgia

We have now had Georgia for 5 months and she is turning into a very good looking, good natured and loving animal. She is overcoming her nervousness. She is not afraid of other dogs – in fact wants to play with them all and if they don't want to play with her she just walks away – and is not aggressive in the slightest. Read more...

Georgie & Tilly

In February 2010 due to the loss of a dear friend of eight years (Rosie) we decided that the house was far too quiet without a dog so we started searching on the internet. That is where we came across Georgie and instantly fell in love with him. Read more...

Jackson has put on almost 3kg since we got him and is adding muscle with daily walks and bush walks every weekend, everywhere we take him we get compliments on what a stunning looking dog he is. Read more...

Josie JDX

We picked up Josie from a Humane Society foster home in February 2008. Agility began in 2009. She loved it and learnt very quickly. She quickly advanced through the grades – elementary, starters and novice – by winning 1 elementary, 2 starters and, in just 3 months, 3 novice championship events and is now currently at intermediate/senior level. These courses are much harder and we are working hard at getting better at them! Read more...

Just to let you know that after 2 very short weeks Martin is settling down really well. He gets on extremely well with our other dog Murphy who at 11 yrs old has now experienced his second childhood! Read more...

Max

All is well here but I thought I would send you an update at 8 months old.... Max (aka "Terry the Terrier") is doing well as you can see from our pictures. He is full of life and keeps us on our toes in all respects. He is behaving "most" of the time and comes to our whistle every time unless there is another dog or something far more interesting then a boring old whistle! Read more...

Milo

Max had been missing his mate of 6 years since she passed away a few weeks ago and it has been great to see Max with a smile on his face again - since Milo joined our family. They are great friends and love each others company.

It feels like we've always had Milo in our house - we were very lucky to find him. He has settled in well, you would think he has been here forever, he is so relaxed, and is having some serious fun. Read more...

Modem is Great!

When we first met Modem we knew he had the right amount of quirkiness and attitude to fit in our family. He had a rough start to life... he was (presumably) abandoned my his mother as a kitten, then hit by a car resulting in a broken leg which needed a pin to hold it in place. We arrived at the foster home, and though the hair on his leg was still growing back he was full of confidence and very inquisitive. Read more...

Mojo

Mojo has proven to be a lovely boy and great company for my little girl who is a Foxy/Jack x. He has fitted in very well. They regularly play together and more often than not sleep together. They are now inseperable and pine for each other when seperated. Read more...

Molly

Our children, aged 3 and 5 had been on to us to get some pets so when we picked up a kitten it seemed only right to get a dog to make the set. We didn’t want either a small yappy thing or a puppy that needed house training so looked on the internet and found Molly. Read more...

Molly

I adopted Molly a couple of weeks ago and she is great. She is very well behaved and just needed a bit more exercise to stimulate her.

She now runs everyday in Totara park,and loves it. She also came on a 2 day tramp in the coromandel ranges. Here are some photos of her new life. Read more...

Monty

I have had "Monty" for 9 months now, adopted from the Humane Society end of May 2010. He really is like a living pillow...he is funny, bouncy, and a joy. He has serious mojo, and is not afraid of any other dogs...he has a deep bark, people are surprised to see a white puffball make that kind of noise!

First of all a big thanks for introducing us to Norton, he has turned out to be a real great dog. Sometimes when we are out walking I stop off at a friends place. They invite me and Norton in for a wine. They just absolutely love him and make areal fuss of him.

Here are some pics of Ollie relaxing at home. We truly love him to bits and he is amazingly gentle with the children. I am constantly getting comments about his looks - people stop me all the time to say what a beautiful dog, and I have to agree - he really is truly beautiful! About a month ago after the tragic loss of our Boxer dog Mason we adopted Gracie (renamed Shelby). She is a border collie x bull terrier. She settled in straight away and has become a much loved member of our family. She has such a sunny disposition and just seems to LOVE everything around her including the cats!! Read more...

Sophie came to us over a year ago now, but somehow she has always been one of us. She clearly understands what we say to her, with her ears pricking up if anyone mentions the word "Walk" or "Car - ride", and will head to either the garage or the front sliding door. Read more...

Thought I would send you an update as I've been at my new home for a week now. I'm loving my new family, they are very very nice and give me lots of attention and are always happy to throw my ball for me, they're always talking to me and telling me what a good, handsome boy I am [as if I didn't know that already] and giving me treats but they do tell me off if I nip which I sometimes do when I get really excited.
